In an interview aired December with Michael Silverblatt on KCRW’s Bookworm Silverblatt called the novella “the purest example so far of the minimalist aesthetic as it used to be enunciated”  and Lin described the novella’s style as deliberately “concrete, with pin the focus on surface details, with no sentences devoted to thoughts or feelings, and I think that results in a kind of themelessness, that, in its lack of focus on anything else, the theme becomes, to me, the passage of time.

It wasn’t very hard at all. There is so much whimsy that all you really want by the end is for Andrew and Ellen to get together and for him to stop thinking about that stupid Sara and for her to stop weirding everyone out so much. The characters here grapple with obsession, with feeling lonely, with being surrounded by the world. I like to fold those cause that means I am buying a 6 pack of wine at The Safeway.

But it did not kick my ass and say thank you afterwards! The reviews for Tao Lin’s work have been extraordinary, so I must be a damned idiot. Taipeihis new novel, has less to do with his generation than with the literary tradition of Knut Hamsun, Ernest Hemingway, and Robert Musil.
However, Lin knows to dig a little deeper into his characters—something we see in Moore’s later stories, but less so in her early ones. I went in honestly expecting to like this– I was incredibly optimistic.

I felt and was made to feel that I just didn’t get it. Some kind of story line, syntax, sympathetic character, action, resolution, or point would have been appreciated. That I know of anyway. I think one person called me a “chink” in about 20 years. A notch below sublime. Lin has one brother who also lives in New York; their father is a retired physics professor   who is the inventor of the flying-spot LASIKa laser procedure for vision correction US pat.
There is an underlying sense of ennui and boredom, as well as a pervasive desire for meaningful contact with others that can’t quite be fulfilled the bears and dolphins perpetually find themselves awkwardly reaching out to others and failing.
Trivia About Eeeee Eee Eeee. For instance, around page 80 the narrator leaves Andrew behind to follow a dolphin to Los Angeles to kill Elijah Wood, and toward the end of the book the narrative is hijacked by a pontificating president. I held it in my hands and sweated and laughed aloud amongst the weight lifters at least three or four specific times during one scene where numerous animals have a philosophical discussion with the president.
There is more dog shit in the piano room. Oh, and there are moody, talking bears and dolphins. Probably the best book title of the millennium, and I truly believe this in my heart of hearts.
